Tar • Clogs the lungs and is responsible of transporting other chemicals into the body. • Stains the teeth and fingernails. Carbon Monoxide • Increases heart beat rate and shortness of breath when the carbon monoxide attached itself onto the red blood cells hindering the blood from carrying oxygen.
Lead • Highly toxic heavy metal which can cause brain, kidney and nervous system damage. • Harmful to young children’s learning abilities and can cause birth defects. Benzene • A carcinogen which causes cancer particularly leukemia. • Affect bone marrow and blood production. Cancer • Men who smoke are 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer than men who do not smoke, while women who smoke are about 13 times more likely. • Smoking is responsible for about 90% of lung cancer deaths in men and 80% in women. • Smoking causes 30% of all cancer related deaths annually.
